The Victory Column was constructed between 1864 and 1873 to celebrate Prussia’s victories in wars against Denmark, Austria, and France. Designed by Heinrich Strack, it originally stood near the Reichstag before being relocated in 1938 to the center of the Tiergarten, where it remains today. The monument is crowned by a gilded statue of Victoria, the Roman goddess of victory, affectionately called “Goldelse” by locals.
Architecturally, the column is notable for its height, mosaic decorations, and reliefs that depict scenes from the wars it commemorates. Inside, a spiral staircase leads visitors to an observation platform that offers panoramic views of Berlin, making it both a historical monument and a popular tourist attraction. The surrounding Tiergarten park adds to its appeal as a scenic and relaxing destination.
Over time, the Victory Column has taken on broader cultural significance beyond its original military purpose. It has served as a backdrop for major public events, celebrations, and demonstrations, reflecting Germany’s complex relationship with its past. Today, it stands as a symbol of Berlin’s layered history, blending imperial ambition, wartime memory, and modern urban life.
