Hype:
Aegidienkirche, originally built in the 14th century, was once one of Hanover’s key Gothic churches. It stood as an active religious structure until World War II, when air raids in 1943 destroyed much of the building, leaving only its walls and tower. Instead of being rebuilt, the city chose to conserve it as a war memorial.
Today the church remains roofless, creating a striking open-air monument that symbolizes peace and remembrance. A memorial bell from Hiroshima, gifted to Hanover as a gesture of reconciliation, is displayed on-site and rung each year on Hiroshima Day. The setting invites quiet reflection and is a meaningful stop for visitors interested in history and architecture.
Its central location makes it easy to pair with visits to the Old Town and other cultural landmarks. The combination of Gothic remnants, symbolic installations, and tranquil ambiance makes Aegidienkirche a distinctive and emotional highlight in Hanover.

Friday, June 27 – We checked out of our VRBO and drove south to Landstraße. Our first stop was Aegidienkirche, a church bombed out in World War II and left roofless as a memorial.
Aegidienkirche was the only planned stop, but as we were driving into town, we noticed a very impressive government building. So after the church, we walked that way a few minutes. It turned out to be the New Town Hall.
Inside were bronze city models from different historical periods. We wandered upstairs to take in the grand architecture before returning to retrieve our car.
