Hype:
Buckingham Palace serves not only as a royal residence but also as a working building where many official events, receptions, and state occasions are held. Its grand architecture and rich history make it one of the most visited landmarks in London, drawing millions each year to view its exterior and surrounding gardens. While the interior is largely private, select State Rooms open seasonally for public tours.
The palace has evolved over centuries, beginning as Buckingham House in the early 18th century before being expanded into a full royal palace under the reigns of King George III and Queen Victoria. Today, it remains a symbol of national identity and monarchy, frequently featured during major events such as Trooping the Colour and royal celebrations.
Its central location near St James’s Park, The Mall, and other major cultural attractions makes it a convenient highlight for visitors exploring London. The experience varies by season, with summer offering the rare opportunity to tour interior rooms and warmer weather drawing large crowds to witness the Changing of the Guard.

Saturday, June 21 - We woke at 7:00 a.m. London time (midnight Utah time). I picked up McDonald’s for breakfast by myself with no navigator, then we got everyone showered and left by 9:00. We caught a bus from our hotel to the Underground, which was much faster and cheaper than driving.
We went to Buckingham Palace first to watch the Changing of the Guard. The palace is the official residence of the British monarch in London. We got there early for a good spot—right at the top of the stairs—and waited along with huge crowds. By 11:15 we were wondering why nothing was happening. People started leaving. We Googled it and discovered that the Changing of the Guard doesn’t happen on Saturdays—wrong day, whoops. Everyone was disappointed.
