Overview

Hype:
Ribe Viking Center is located just outside Ribe, the oldest town in Denmark, and represents the Viking settlement of Ripa as it may have appeared around the year 800. The site covers a large outdoor area with reconstructed homes, workshops, a marketplace, a harbor, and religious structures, all designed using archaeological evidence to ensure historical accuracy.
Visitors can engage with living history activities, including demonstrations of traditional Viking crafts such as blacksmithing, weaving, pottery, and bread baking. Staff and volunteers dressed as Vikings interact with guests, explain daily routines, and invite participation in hands-on activities, making the experience educational and immersive for both adults and children.
The center operates mainly during the warmer months and hosts special events like Viking markets, themed activity weeks, and historical reenactments. Because most of the experience takes place outdoors, weather and season play a major role in determining the quality of a visit.

Story
We spent Thursday afternoon at the Ribe Viking Center. We arrived at 1:45 and ate a picnic lunch in the parking lot before going in.
Since the Viking Center was only open until 5:00, we hurried to see everything we could. Our first stop was at the falcon show at 2:00. So we ran up there to see it in time. They had some cool falcons swooping around. One of them flew back and forth right over the audience around the whole perimeter.
At the end of the show, it started raining really hard, so we sought shelter. We tried to go in the blacksmith tent, but he told us we couldn’t, so we ran back under a different building. I brained myself on a low beam and gave myself a pretty big bruise on the top of my head. It hurt for a long time.
We paid for an extra activity card so the kids could do the bonus activities, which included wood carving, silver stamping, and archery. We did the stick carving first.
That was taking a while and only one person could do it, so we split up and Cooper and I went to do his silver stamping. They gave him a little silver round piece that he put in a die and hit with a hammer.
We then walked through the Viking village to see the different leather working, weaving, and other crafts.
We think local people must rent out tents to sell their crafts in, but we’re not really sure. We met back up with Tara and the girls and took some pictures at the Viking boats.
Then Cooper used a wooden hammer to pound wooden sticks through round holes to make dowels. He really enjoyed that.
Tara took Madi to do archery. Madi had a hard time with archery because they were simple bows, but she almost hit the deer anyway.
Then we met up with them there and did some sword fighting. Madi didn’t appreciate me hitting her with a wooden sword—go figure.
