Lübeck Cathedral is one of the oldest major churches in Lübeck, originally established by Henry the Lion in 1173 as a Romanesque basilica before being extensively remodeled into a Brick Gothic structure in the 13th and 14th centuries. Its architecture reflects the wealth and influence of Lübeck during the height of the Hanseatic League, with impressive vaults, tall spires, and a commanding presence on the city’s southern edge.
Inside, the cathedral houses significant artworks, including a monumental crucifix by Bernt Notke and several medieval altarpieces, as well as later Baroque and Renaissance additions. Despite suffering heavy damage during World War II, much of the cathedral has been carefully restored, preserving both its spiritual atmosphere and its historical character.
Today, Lübeck Cathedral functions as both a place of worship and a cultural landmark, hosting concerts, services, and visitors interested in history, architecture, and sacred art. It stands as a symbol of Lübeck’s resilience and enduring cultural heritage, complementing the city’s UNESCO-listed old town.

We walked around the corner to the Lübeck Cathedral, which was originally founded in 1173 and reconstructed after bombing in 1942. We went inside, walked around, and took some pictures.
They had some cool exhibits about structural engineering and some of the issues facing the building, including poor soil, deteriorating bricks, and major instabilities in the towers due to leaning.
