Cold War Museum Stevnsfort is situated near Rødvig on the Stevns peninsula and is part of Denmark’s national museum network. Originally a top-secret coastal fortress, it was designed to monitor and defend Danish waters during the Cold War and remained operational for decades before being decommissioned and later opened to the public.
The main visitor experience is a guided tour through more than a kilometer of underground tunnels carved deep into the chalk cliffs. These tours showcase authentic military rooms, equipment, and living quarters, giving insight into daily life for soldiers stationed there and the broader geopolitical context of the Cold War.
The museum is also close to Stevns Klint, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making it a popular combined destination for history and nature. While the underground areas stay cool year-round, the outdoor sections and surrounding landscape make weather an important factor when planning a visit.

Thursday, August 7 - Our last tourist day in Europe. We drove south for about an hour to the eastern coast of Denmark. We went to the Cold War Museum Stevnsfort. Their next available tour through the tunnels in English was at 1:30, so we had about an hour and a half to walk around the surface displays. They had a bunch of military equipment on display. That was our first time inside a tank.
We really liked the large machine guns that took two people to operate—one person turned left and right while the other went up and down.
We had lunch on a picnic table and then joined a guided tour through the underground bunkers. Our tour guide was a former military engineer who had worked on the base before it was closed, so it was fun to get his perspective.
We went through almost a mile of underground tunnels to different rooms.
Then we came out of a tunnel to the bottom of the cliffs into the ocean.
The chalk dissolves quickly, leaving flint layers behind, so the beach was made up entirely of uniformly sized round balls of flint.
