Hype:

Frederiksborg Castle Gardens were originally laid out during the reign of King Frederik IV and represent one of Scandinavia’s most significant Baroque garden designs. The formal layout is characterized by geometric precision, terraced levels, and long sightlines that connect the gardens visually to the castle itself, emphasizing order and grandeur.

In addition to the Baroque garden, the area also includes a romantic landscape garden developed in the 19th century, featuring winding paths, wooded areas, and more naturalistic scenery. This contrast allows visitors to experience both the strict elegance of classical garden design and the softer, picturesque style popular in later periods.

Today, the gardens are open to the public and serve as a popular destination for walking, photography, and seasonal events. Their appearance changes dramatically throughout the year, with fountains operating in warmer months and colorful plantings highlighting spring and summer, while autumn foliage and winter stillness offer a quieter atmosphere.

Story

Sunday, July 13 – We woke up early and drove north to Frederiksborg Castle. Even though the castle didn’t open until 10:00, we wanted to get there early so that we could get free parking. It ended up not being a problem. We wandered through the gardens outside the castle. They had a lot of very sculpted topiaries and gardens in shapes of the crest and formal-style designs.
