The New Pavilion, or Neuer Pavillon, is located in the landscaped gardens of Charlottenburg Palace in Berlin and represents one of the most refined examples of Prussian neoclassical architecture. Designed by Karl Friedrich Schinkel and completed between 1824 and 1825, it was inspired by Italian villa architecture and intended as an intimate royal residence rather than a ceremonial palace.
Architecturally, the pavilion is characterized by its clear geometric form, balanced proportions, and classical detailing, reflecting Schinkel’s emphasis on harmony and restraint. Inside, the rooms were originally decorated in a style influenced by Mediterranean aesthetics, offering the king a tranquil retreat from court life while still showcasing contemporary artistic tastes.
After suffering heavy damage during World War II, the New Pavilion was carefully reconstructed and later restored to reflect its historical appearance. Today, it functions as a museum featuring 19th-century art, restored interiors, and exhibitions related to Schinkel’s work, making it an important cultural and architectural highlight within the Charlottenburg Palace complex.

We changed into street clothes in the church bathroom and took a bus to Charlottenburg Palace. The palace was heavily bombed in World War II and reconstructed; the old and the new wings are both on show. We ate lunch on the benches outside, toured the old palace and the new palace sections, walked the gardens, and visited the mausoleum.
We missed the pavilion tour by a couple of minutes, so Savannah and I took the next available guided tour while the others relaxed on the grass. We played cards while waiting.
