Hype:

Willy Spahn Park is a public urban park and green space in the Ahlem district of Hannover, Germany. It was created on the site of a former marl quarry and later an orchard, and was opened to the public in 2004 after being transformed from industrial and agricultural use into a landscaped park.

The park covers about 4 hectares (0.04 km²) and features a network of walking paths (approximately 1.3 km long) winding through terraced landscapes with old apple, pear, plum, and cherry trees, many of whose fruit visitors are allowed to pick. It also includes a restored historic lime kiln (Kalkbrennofen) from the early 20th century, which now serves as an industrial heritage monument and can be viewed during special events.

The setting blends natural vegetation and quiet green spaces with cultural history, making it a pleasant spot for strolling, relaxing, family visits, and enjoying nature within the city. The park is connected to the regional “Grüner Ring” bicycle and walking route around Hannover, increasing its appeal to cyclists and walkers.

Story

From Hildesheim, we drove on to Hanover and stayed in a VRBO. 

After a late dinner and getting the kids settled, we had about 45 minutes before bed, so I took a walk through the nearby parks. The most interesting thing there was a giant patch of stinging nettle. 

They also had a strange structure with a giant smoke stack. No idea what it was.
