Overview

Hype:
Frederiksborg Castle was originally built in the early 17th century by King Christian IV and is considered one of the finest examples of Renaissance architecture in Scandinavia. After a devastating fire in 1859, the castle was carefully reconstructed, preserving its historical appearance while incorporating later restoration techniques. Its lavish interiors, including the Great Hall and the richly decorated Chapel of Orders, reflect the power and artistic ambitions of Denmark’s monarchy.
The castle now serves as the Museum of National History, offering visitors an in-depth look at Denmark’s political, cultural, and social development from the late Middle Ages to modern times. Exhibits include royal portraits, historical paintings, and period furnishings, making it an important cultural institution as well as a former royal residence.
Surrounding the castle are the Frederiksborg Baroque Gardens and landscaped parklands, which add to the site’s appeal, especially in warmer months. The combination of architectural grandeur, historical significance, and scenic surroundings makes Frederiksborg Castle one of Denmark’s most popular and memorable attractions.

Story
Sunday, July 13 – We woke up early and drove north to Frederiksborg Castle. Even though the castle didn’t open until 10:00, we wanted to get there early so that we could get free parking. It ended up not being a problem. We wandered through the gardens outside the castle. They had a lot of very sculpted topiaries and gardens in shapes of the crest and formal-style designs.
We toured the castle. They had quite a few fun displays of the stone statues that they are in the process of duplicating with new stones that aren’t damaged. It was fun to see how much effort each one takes, even with modern methods.
In the basement, they had some fun pencil rubbing activities. Cooper was pretty sick of castles by this point, so we tried to focus on as many of the kid activities as we could while we were there.
We finished the castle tour around 1:00 and ate lunch on a bench outside. Our lunches have been pretty plain, just sandwiches with sides. But that’s about our option with no cooler.
After that, we spent over an hour at one of their craft tables. They had a bunch of sticks and fabric scraps, wire, string, and yarn.
In the castle, there was a temporary exhibit with a bunch of stick creatures wearing fashionable outfits. They challenged us to make our own stick creatures. We had a lot of fun with that.
Savannah’s giant yellow bird was especially aggressive, and we all ended up helping with that when we were done with ours.
