Overview

Hype:

Located in the town of Jelling in central Jutland, this historic complex dates back to the 10th century and is closely associated with the formation of Denmark as a unified state. The two large burial mounds are among the most impressive from the Viking Age, and the smaller of the two rune stones is often called Denmark’s “birth certificate” due to its inscription naming the country.

The larger rune stone, erected by King Harald Bluetooth, is especially significant for its detailed runic text and early depiction of Christ, illustrating the shift toward Christianity. Together with the mounds, the stones show how political power, religion, and monumental architecture were used to legitimize royal authority during the Viking Age.

The Jelling Church, built centuries later on the same site, reinforces the area’s continuous religious importance. Today, the site is carefully preserved, with a modern visitor center that provides context through exhibitions and archaeological findings, making it a key destination for understanding Scandinavian history.

Story

Before heading back to Copenhagen, we made a quick detour to Jelling, where we saw the burial mounds, church, and runestone that commemorated the founding of Denmark. That was pretty fun. 

We also bought a giant pizza for dinner. For some reason they wouldn't let us eat it in the restaurant, so we sat on the sidewalk and ate our dinner there.
