Hamburg Town Hall was completed in 1897 after the previous city hall was destroyed in the Great Fire of 1842, and it reflects the wealth and independence Hamburg enjoyed during the late 19th century. Its elaborate sandstone façade, central tower rising over 110 meters, and richly decorated interiors were designed to convey civic pride and political power.
Inside, the building features an impressive courtyard, ceremonial halls, and the Great Hall, which is used for official receptions and events. Guided tours allow visitors to explore rooms adorned with murals, sculptures, and chandeliers that depict Hamburg’s history, maritime heritage, and democratic traditions.
Situated near the Alster lakes and surrounded by shopping streets and historic squares, Hamburg Town Hall is a focal point for both tourists and locals. It regularly hosts public events, markets, and celebrations, making it not only an architectural landmark but also a living center of civic life in the city.

On the way back we stopped at Hamburg Town Hall (Rathaus) and went inside; the stonework and the interior details are stunning.
